Fran Rice has lived most of her life in Oklahoma. She studied art through Northlight Art School, Rogers State College, University of Central Oklahoma and various workshops over the years. Her work has been accepted at international juried art shows and she has won many placements at at shows in Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas including Best in Show. She works in oil, acrylic, pastel and watercolor on paper and canvas and also paints small animal portraits in oil on feathers. Fran in certified as a Native American Artist by the United States Department of the Interior, Indian Arts and Crafts Board, Washington D.C.
The feather art is all done on turkey feathers in order to comply with Oklahoma Wildlife Department requirements. The feathers are mostly large "skirt" feathers and are purchased through a dealer. After the selected feathers are received, Fran then irons them and the combination of leaning and heat seems to destroy any mites that may affect the stability of the artwork. In the nine years she has been working on them, there has not been any any noticeable deterioration on the older pieces. All matting and custom framing is done by her husband, Jim, working with acid free products.
Mrs. Rice is an active member of the Chickasaw Nation and exhibits mostly of Native American Art Festivals such as Red Earth Festival in OKC, Tulsa Indian Art Festival in Tulsa, OK and the Chickasaw Nation's Southeastern Art Show and Market in Tishamingo where she has been a featured artist at the Annual Chickasaw Meeting in 2002 and 2004. She won first in the "Open" Division and second place in the "Painting" at this show in 2007. Her feathers are in homes in Brazil, England, South Africa, Alaska and many other states in the USA.
